A better World

Are we kidding ourselves that we can accomplish a better world? In light of the break-ins (hacks) that I experienced lately and thinking of viruses, exploits, and other harmful software developed by people wanting to harm or take advantage of others, I am wondering. When you read the news and scan the files of all the peace organizations, it seems more like the depravity of many minds is increasing. Is there any wonder?

Most stories ever written, all history, as our present time, contain elements of good and evil. In stories it is called “conflict” in order to make the story interesting and suspenseful. Possibly with our expectations noone could write a suspenseful story without conflict, lol.

In all religions there are also references to evil. Because humanity has a mean streak, most gods are molded in the image of man and therefore exhibit human temper, depravity, the power to visit their displeasure on people, more than good things which always have to be earned through behavior, sacrifice, gifts, religious devotion.

Now why is humanity often so very evil? Why does  it  not really give a fig about murder, war, torture,  theft, swearing, infidelity, and lots of other actions that hurt? Why are responsibility, love, the good things often perverted so one can not recognize them?

Thousans of years ago, after the recreation of the earth Lucifer, the chief archangel, who had wanted to usurp God’s throne, was cast down to the earth: Isaiah: 14:12-15  His name was changed to Devil and Satan. Because Satan knows what God’s plan is for humanity, he and his angels then set out to deceive the world (See Adam and Eve, and he never stops perverting truth). Revelation: 12:9 How, you ask? Have you never had a nasty thought hit you from nowhere? Did you dwell on it? Did you eventually carry it out? Are you not getting evil ideas, distorted concepts  from TV and other places where words and thoughts travel through space? Because Satan and his evil spirits have the “power of the air” Satan being its prince. They are the spirits that work “in the children of disobedience”. Real christians were also affected having partaken in “the lusts of our flesh, fulfilling the desires of the flesh and of the mind; and were by nature the children of wrath, even as others” until they were called and submitted to God and his grace. Ephesians 2:2-3

I remember one time in a supermarket, it struck me, listening to a couple of women gossiping with each other, that they had copied the mannerisms, affectations, wording about events in their lives from the afternoon TV sitcoms. All the put-downs and bullying, the ease of illicit sex and divorce, the artificial power of robotic creatures, and all the other crap that we absorb so easily and that we are told we want to see because it is “real life”… but that many of us only learn about through watching it are right there in front of us on TV from childhood on. Both sociology and psychology teach us that humans become what we are through our social environment.

Even the apostle Paul said “I know I am rotten through and through so far as my old sinful nature is concerned. No matter which way I turn, I can’t make myself do right. I want to, but I can’t.” Romans 7:18 Therefore, in order for my efforts, my thoughts and actions to have integrity, passion, and truth I need to acknowledge that it is God in me who makes my efforts for success and honour bear fruit.

Today not too many people shrink from grotesque and truly evil characters and love to watch horror movies, which I believe are outgrowths of Satan’s perverted mind. But even among churchianity there are “false apostles, deceitful workers, transforming themselves into apostles of Christ….and no marvel; for Satan himself is transformed into an angel of light.” II Corinthians: 11:13-14 All through history biblical principles and approaches to living christianity have been rocky fields to negotiate.

Here is the indictment against our logic that humanity embraces since eating from the tree of knowledge: Romans 1:18-22 “…God shows his anger from heaven against all sinful, wicked people who push the truth away from themselves. For the truth about God is known to them instinctively. God has put this knowledge in their hearts. From the time the world was created, people have seen the earth and sky and all that God made. They can clearly see his invisible qualities–his eternal power and divine nature. So they have no excuse whatsoever for not knowing God.

Yes, they knew God, but they wouldn’t worship him as God or even give him thanks. And they began to think up foolish ideas of what God was like. The result was that their minds became dark and confused. Claiming to be wise, they became (without realizing it) utter fools instead.”

In Christianity it is believed that a better world cannot be achieved until God as Jesus Christ returns after humanity has truly discovered, in spite of every effort, that without God it cannot overcome the wrongs in this world. The best humanity can hope to accomplish is some individuals’ awesome accomplishments that may serve others to lighten the burdens of the less able. When people have a deep love relationship with God they know that the future of humanity is not of this world but depends on learning to see through God’s eyes and making the decisions that go with this perspective.

Yes there can be light in individual lives. When I was a child I used to be assigned the boring job of raking the garden paths and weeding between the cobblestones of our yard. It took forever poking at the weeds in the cracks between the stones and neatly depositing them in a pail destined for the compost pile; but I was admonished that it had to be done in a day. One time, an hour or so into the job, a friend from school stopped by accompanied by two of her friends. They decided to give me a hand. It was amazing. Not only did four sets of hands accomplish the task faster, but by chatting and getting to know each other the time passed so quickly that it did not appear to be a job that took 3 hours with all 4 of us working at it! And it seemed like fun too.

And collectively, can you imagine what a few million people like that can accomplish when they work together? All of them with their unique personalities, experiences, and individual contributions they can bring to a task!

Chances are so many people cannot possibly be found in any one particular place. They will be sprinkled throughout the populations of the world. However, most of them need no longer toil alone. They too can use some of the power of the air. The Internet joins us and gives us connections that we can constantly tap to revive our commitments.

In any participation I bring toward a better world I must acknowledge that it is not I in my own strength who achieves anything. I believe in a being called God that is greater than all that is, that in fact laid the foundations of the visible and invisible worlds and is the essence of all that exists with a logic and an order that is discovered daily in the sciences of our universities. I know that this being is and that it will be with me through thick and thin and that I will accomplish with God in me what is expected of me in this life.

There are philosophies in this world that have pacivist origins, based on various versions of the ultimate God. A few years ago the Dalai Lama of Tibet visited Toronto, Ontario, Canada. Impressing his calm, joyous, and thoughtful personality on a restless and stressed audience he was inundated with people asking him how they could become Buddhists. He surprised everyone. He told them that they were Buddhists if they became better Muslims, better Jews, better Christians, better expressors of whatever faith they had already. (I heard the tape on CBC Radio1 on the program Tapestry 29/08/04 – Buddhism Comes to North America). Here is a man with vision.
